Lore & Background

The core of this group revolves around the disciples of Torak. Zedar, formerly a disciple of Aldur who became known as the Apostate, was encased alive in stone by Belgarath. Ctuchik, a high priest and disciple, destroyed himself while attempting to annihilate the Orb of Aldur. Urvon, another disciple, served as head of the Mallorean Church of Torak until he was driven insane and dragged into Hell by the demon Nahaz. Chabat, a Grolim priestess, faced Belgarath's daughter Polgara and the god Aldur before being banished to Hell. The Dark Prophecy itself possessed various hosts over time: first Torak (the long-time Child of Dark), then an ancient Karand who discovered the Sardion, followed by an early Melcene Emperor, a scholar from the University of Melcene, Zandramas after Torak's demise, and finally Geran, the son of Belgarion. This lineage of possession highlights the shifting nature of the dark power they serve.

In Their Own Story

In Mallorea and Cthol Murgos, the actions of these sorcerers drove significant conflicts. Agachak, the Grolim High Priest, co-conspired with King Urgit to eliminate Emperor Zakath before being eaten by Zandramas. Naradas, the right-hand man of Zandramas, was a Grolim priest with entirely white eyes who was eventually poisoned by Sadi. Harakan, known also as Ulfgar and Mengha, summoned the demon Nahaz and headed the Bear-Cult; he met his end killed by Zith, a small venomous snake belonging to Sadi. Mordja, the Totem Demon of the Morindim, fled from the power infused into Durnik by Aldur before being enticed by Zandramas into dragon form and slain by Belgarion. The demon Nahaz himself was banished by Durnik after entrancing Urvon into insanity. These events culminated in Torak's death at the hands of Belgarion, who held titles including Godslayer.

Reader's Guide

To understand this group, one must distinguish between the various disciples and their fates. Zandramas, previously a Grolim priestess, became the Child of Dark after Torak's death and served as the main antagonist in The Malloreon before changing into a cluster of stars at the climax. Asharak (real name Chamdar), who killed Garion's parents, was subsequently killed by Garion. Brill (real name Kordoch) was an assassin charged with disrupting Garion's quest but was killed by Silk. The group also includes Grolim priests like Naradas and Agachak, and the demon Nahaz. Their operations often involved the Sardion or the Orb of Aldur. For instance, Zedar attempted to use a boy named Errand (later Eriond) to steal the Orb. Eriond eventually became the new Child of Light and then the new God of the Angaraks after Torak's death. The group's influence is tied directly to the Dark Prophecy and its possession of various hosts, ending with Geran as the final Child of Dark.
